Sources

How we choose, weigh and check sources. And which have passed all three steps so far.

Where a figure or claim on this site rests on a source, that source is in our register. Next to the reference sits a small mark. Its shape shows what we know of the source: whether we have read it, whether it is an estimate, whether the link still works.

How we choose

The source itself comes first. We read a law in the legal text, a standard at the body that makes it and research in the paper itself. Someone else’s summary is at most a second source.
A source must be traceable. It has a title, a publisher and a location: a URL or a DOI. If one is missing, we leave it out. We note a date when the source gives one.
We point to the version in force. When we see that a law or standard has changed, we update the reference.

How we weigh

For what you must do, the legal text or the official standard carries the most weight.
For what works, research carries the most weight when you can follow its method.
An organisation is a good source for what it does itself. For what it achieves, we look for someone else who shows it.
We call a figure we counted ourselves our own count. Next to it we say how we counted, so you can count again. Or we say that we still have to write it down.
We do not give sources a score. A number per source looks more precise than it is. We would rather write down what a source does and does not show.

How we check, in three steps

We open the source itself and note its title, publisher, date and URL or DOI. We also note the day we read it. And we copy a word-for-word quote, with where it appears.
Someone else reads the source and tries to refute what we take from it. If they succeed, we drop our claim or change it.
We look for a second source that says the same, independent of the first. And we check that nothing else on our site contradicts it.

We call a source triple-checked only when it has passed all three steps.

What we leave out

A source without a title, a publisher or a location.
A source we cannot find at its publisher, even when it appears in another list.
A score someone gave a source without showing how.
A name that is almost right, such as a wrong abbreviation or a year that does not fit. Then we look up the real source.

What the marks say

The mark next to a figure has six shapes. The shape carries the meaning, not the colour. Triple-checked has no shape of its own. Those sources are in the list below.
